With the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts marking 34 years since its first opening, RIBA Journal this month revisits Norman Foster’s visionary design. During my 8 years involvement at the Sainsbury Centre as project architect (with Foster + Partners) for the more recent refurbishment and alterations, we paid particular attention to maintaining the master pieces original vision. Much of the design ideas still hold today and stand as a remarkable achievement in how a strong concept can produce fantastic architecture, how great design evolves out of close interaction with a client, and how a spectacular building can be delivered under enormous budget constraints. The Sainsbury Centre has captured the imagination of so many and will always be one of my favourite buildings.
